There’s a lot of land in New York’s second largest city, and you might be surprised who owns the most of it.
Across the country, there are people and businesses that own a lot of land and property.
For example, according to a USA Today article, CNN founder Ted Turner owns over 2 million acres of land across the United States. To put this into context, if you take the state of Rhode Island and multiply it by 3, you have roughly the same amount of land that Turner owns.
My grandfather told me that land and real estate are among the things in which you have to invest because, unlike other commodities, they no longer bring in any money.

In 2020, Buffalo State College’s Department of Geography and Planning conducted a study of available public records in Erie County, New York to find the answer to this exact question.
Their study initially focused on the number of vacant lots in the city of Buffalo that could be used for future development. However, while digging through the data, they discovered an interesting fact.
They discovered that the Buffalo city government had nearly 7,000 vacant properties. Add that to the nearly 1,000 other structures that are owned by the city, and it makes the City of Buffalo the largest landowner in Buffalo.
Owning nearly 8,000 lots, some with buildings and some without, the city owes more property than any other individual or business in Western New York.
Western New York is experiencing such a real estate crisis for people trying to buy a home, it might not be a bad idea to try to acquire land in Buffalo and build a new home.
