Local paraeducator receives surprise scholarship

By Edwin Oscar Gutierrez, Jr.

An Olympia teacher received a scholarship during a surprise visit from Western Governors University (WGU) earlier today to her school.

Alicia Dufay, a para-educator at Garfield Elementary School, was visited by WGU (Western Governors University) staff who informed her that she would be receiving a $4,000 Military Spouse Scholarship from the university.

Dufay plans to earn her master’s degree at WGU, with the university pledging to help her complete her degree “at a pace that works for her and her family,” according to a WGU press release.

“One of the benefits of WGU being completely online is that there’s never been a time when I had to give up something in my daily life, with my family, with my job, in order to do something for the school,” said Dufay, who is already a WGU alumnus. “I was able to do things completely on my schedule.”

The scholarship is part of what Dufay will get, being featured on the TV show Military Makeover. The scholarship comes with a total renovation of her family’s home, in recognition of her and her husband’s contribution to the Olympia community and country.

Dufay, a military wife, and her husband also have a child with special needs. Her story airs Friday, June 24 on Lifetime TV.
